Supporting Your Child: 3-5 Years
At this age, children are building skills that prepare them for school and life. Their bodies, brains and feelings are continuing to develop as they explore their world. Their learning develops into different subjects, like math and science, as they prepare for kindergarten.
At this age, a child’s world is opening up. They are becoming more independent and are starting to focus more on people, children and adults, outside their family. They are asking lots of questions and exploring frequently. A child’s interactions with their caregivers shapes their personality, how they think and understand the world.
Children this age may ride a tricycle, notice the difference between girls and boys, help to dress and undress themselves, play with other children, sing a song, and recall parts of stories.
All children grow and develop at their own pace. If you have concerns about your child’s development, contact your health care provider.
Colorado’s Early Learning & Development Guidelines
The Early Learning & Development Guidelines offer age-specific tips and resources to support children’s physical, cognitive and social-emotional development from birth through age 8. All of us have “temperament” or our own personal style that is present since birth.
A child’s temperament impacts the way they approach and react to the world.
Understanding your child’s temperament can help you parent more effectively.
